Who qualifies for the battery rebate?
- Its size is 5 to 100 kWh (nominal), and the Clean Energy Council's approved list includes it.
- Solar Accreditation Australia must accredit the installer, who also needs a battery endorsement.
- Solar panels must be part of the setup, whether new or existing. If a battery charges only from the grid, it doesn't qualify.
- Installation has to happen on or after 1 July 2025, and certificates go to just one battery per home.
The Clean Energy Regulator battery page has the full list.
What is excluded?
- With no solar panels at all, a battery can't qualify, because storing grid power alone makes it ineligible.
- If a home already has one, adding another won't earn certificates, because the limit is one per address.
- Installed before 1 July 2025, a battery doesn't count.
- A battery that's under 5 kWh, or that isn't on the approved list, doesn't qualify.
The federal eligibility page sets out the rules.
Does a bigger battery earn more?
Yes, but past 14 kWh the rate per extra kWh drops, and once your usable storage goes beyond 50 kWh, nothing more counts. Install by 31 December 2026 and you get roughly $2,720 off 10 kWh, $4,760 off 20 kWh, and $3,640 off 13.5 kWh.
Do states have their own rules?
They only add rules where they add money. To get Western Australia's rebate, you must join a virtual power plant through Synergy or Horizon Power; the NSW VPP incentive likewise pays only to members of one. Every other state uses only the federal rules above.

Enter your postcode and battery size to see the federal discount and your state's extra. Accredited installers near you can then quote with the rebate already taken off.
Work out my battery rebateCommon questions about battery rebate eligibility
Do I have to join a virtual power plant?
The federal discount doesn't require it. Being able to join one is all the battery needs.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar?
Yes. Solar has to be connected to the battery, but the panels may be new or already on your roof.
Does a second battery get the rebate?
No. Certificates are earned by only one battery per home.
